Traditional Threads Ceremony

Upanayanam

Upanayanam, also known as the Traditional Threads Ceremony, is a significant rite of passage for young Brahmin boys in Hindu culture. This ceremonial rite marks the boy’s entry into Brahmacharya (the student stage of life) and involves the investment with the sacred thread (Yagnopaveetam) and the initiation into the Gayatri Mantra. The term “Upanayanam” means “taking near” and symbolizes taking the boy closer to knowledge and spiritual growth. The ceremony signifies a spiritual rebirth, making the boy a “Dvija” or “twice-born.” Traditionally, this ceremony is performed when the boy is just past seven years old but should not be delayed beyond sixteen.

Rituals We Follow

1. NAANDHI: The blessings of the child’s ancestors are sought before the Upanayanam ceremony.

2. UTHAKA SHANTHI: Water is collected in a pot (Kalasha), purified with mantras, and poured over the child to protect him from evil.

3. YAGNOPAVEETHA DHARANAM: The sacred thread, consisting of three strands, is placed across the child’s left shoulder by his father. A girdle made of Munja grass is also tied around the child’s waist.

4. KUMARA BHOJANAM: The child sits with other Brahmachari boys and is served food.

5. BRAHMOPADESHAM: The child’s father, acting as his guru, whispers the powerful Gayatri Mantra to him.

6. SURYA DARSHANAM: The child seeks blessings from the Sun God by viewing the Sun through a peep hole between his palms.

7. DANDA DHAARANAM: A twig from a Peepal tree is placed in the child’s right hand, signifying his entry into Brahmacharya.

8. BHIKSHAKARANAM: The child symbolically asks for alms of rice from his mother and other women.

9. ABHIVATHANAM: The child gives Sashtaanga Namaskaram (prostration) and seeks blessings from the elders present. The first person chosen for Abhivathanam is the child’s mother, who introduced him to the world.
