5. KASHI YATRA (PILGRIMAGE RITUAL)
In a playful twist, the groom pretends to leave for a pilgrimage to Kashi, while the bride’s family persuades him to stay and marry their daughter, symbolizing the groom’s acceptance of his new role.
6. GANESH POOJA (WORSHIP OF LORD GANESHA)
The wedding ceremony begins with Ganesh Pooja, a ritual to seek blessings for a smooth and prosperous wedding. Lord Ganesha is worshiped to remove any obstacles from the wedding proceedings.
7. GAURI POOJA (WORSHIP OF GODDESS GAURI)
While the groom participates in Ganesh Pooja, the bride offers prayers to Goddess Gauri, seeking blessings for fertility, motherhood, and a harmonious married life.
8. BRIDE’S ENTRY
The bride makes her entrance, often accompanied by her family. In some traditions, she is carried in a decorated basket to the wedding venue. A curtain or screen called Terasala is used to keep the bride and groom from seeing each other until certain rituals are completed.
9. KANYADAAN & PANIGRAHANAM (GIVING AWAY THE BRIDE)
During Kanyadaan, the bride’s parents wash the groom’s feet and offer their daughter’s hand in marriage. The groom promises to love, respect, and protect his bride, marking the formal acceptance of their union.
10. JEELAKARA-BELLAM (CUMIN AND JAGGERY RITUAL)
This ritual involves the couple applying a paste of cumin and jaggery on each other’s heads. It symbolizes their commitment to stick together through life’s sweet and bitter moments.
11. MANGALSUTRAM (SACRED THREAD CEREMONY)
The Mangalsutram is a sacred yellow thread with gold pendants that the groom ties around the bride’s neck, symbolizing their union. The thread signifies thoughts, speech, and actions, binding the couple physically, mentally, and spiritually.
12. TALAMBRALU (SHOWERING WITH RICE)
In a light-hearted moment, the bride and groom shower each other with talambralu (rice or colored thermocol balls). This ritual is both fun and symbolic, involving family and friends in the joyous celebration.
13. PRADHANAM (RING-FINDING GAME)
A pot filled with milk, rose petals, and a gold ring is presented. The bride and groom take turns to find the ring, adding an element of playful competition to the ceremony.
